Breaking Workplace Silos: Three Conversations That Help Teams Work Together

Communication & Collaboration

A handover can fail even when everyone is working hard. One team assumes a request is urgent. Another waits for a missing detail. A third believes someone else owns the decision. This illustrative situation shows why breaking silos begins with clearer conversations.

1. Clarify the shared outcome

Ask: “What are we trying to achieve together?” Agree what a good result looks like, who needs it and when. Make competing priorities visible before discussing tasks.

2. Connect before assuming

Ask the other team about its information, constraints and dependencies. Replace “They never respond” with “What do you need from us to move this forward?” Listen for gaps rather than looking for someone to blame.

3. Commit to a visible next step

Close with an owner, an action and a check-in date. Write a short summary so everyone can correct misunderstandings early.

Try this at work

Choose one recurring handover. Complete three sentences together: “Our shared outcome is…”, “We need clarity on…” and “Our next agreed step is…”. Review what changes after the next handover.
